Phil Crouch - BIO

Phil began playing guitar at age 12. He earned an Associate Degree in Music from Holyoke Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies from Westfield State College in 1992, followed by a year of graduate work at the University of North Texas. In 2005, he earned his Music Teaching Certification (K–12) from Westfield State College. Phil served as Music Director at Cathedral High School from 2006–2008 and has taught guitar lessons at all levels for nearly 20 years. He has also performed in pit bands for Broadway shows, as well as in rock, blues, and jazz bands throughout New England.

My Approach to Teaching

My approach to teaching focuses on the fundamentals — sight reading, technique, and musicianship. For intermediate and advanced students, I build on those core skills while incorporating the styles of music they enjoy, including metal, rock, pop, blues, funk, and jazz. I encourage students to explore their creativity by writing compositions and expressing themselves through improvisation on the guitar, especially in jazz music.
