Who was the Queen of Funk?
By Bridget Sobolewski, Vocal Teacher, Falcetti School of
Music
Betty Davis (born Betty Mabry) was born July 26, 1945 in
North Carolina. Betty was born to a nurse and a
steelworker. She found her love of music in her
grandmother, Beulah Blackwell, who introduced her to the
world of blues. Her first song titled “I’m Gonna Bake That
Cake of Love” was written at the young age of twelve.
Betty Davis, better known as the Queen of Funk, changed
the funk music scene as we know it. She pioneered the way
for other female artists to shine and bring their own
unique style to the music industry. However, this was in
no way an easy path to pave. Betty faced consistent
backlash throughout her career. Many believe her music was
just too risqué for a female to be producing. During a
time in which female artists were highly encouraged to be
managed by a producer, Betty chose to write almost all her
songs on her own as well as produce them independently.
During their short marriage, Betty greatly influenced
Miles Davis and his music. Shortly after their marriage
ended Miles Davis would begin to change his jazz sound to
a little more rock and roll style. Although their marriage
was short-lived, Miles Davis continued to express how
talented Betty truly was.
Betty was ahead of her time which meant she would not get
the true credit she deserved at the time. Although Betty’s
stage presence was brilliant and captivating, Betty
herself was a calm and introverted individual. She did not
feel the need to be in the bright lights. After her father
passed away, whom she was very close with, Betty stopped
producing music. Betty enjoyed the rest of her days in
privacy. In 2017 “ Betty-They Say I’m Different” was
released, documenting Betty’s life.
Whether you're a fan of funk music or not, there is
something to appreciate about Betty’s music. This month,
try something new and listen to one of Betty’s albums. My
favorite would have to be her first album, Betty Davis.
Enjoy the creativity of an amazing female artist.
