Kate Wyly - BIO

Kate is a violinist from Ithaca, NY currently working on a masters in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT with Katie Lansdale and Teri Einfeldt. Previously she studied at Oberlin Conservatory with Francesca dePasquale where she particularly loved exploring new forms of music making and performing with her quartet in Uruguay. She has enjoyed teaching piano and violin since age 11 and hopes to continue working with young musicians for many more decades. She is passionate about bringing the joys of music learning into the lives of all interested kids and embracing music’s ability to foster connection, creativity, and change.

To use the language of the Suzuki community, I share the fundamental belief that “Every Child Can” learn music in a supportive environment, the way we all learn language or our “mother tongue.” “Talent” is not a rare gift, but is “Nurtured by Love.

My Approach to Teaching

I collaborate with each student to create a musical learning environment that is both fun and challenging. I think music is a perfect area for exploring the intersection of challenge, confidence, and a bit of silliness. Finding growth through what may first feel confusing or even frustrating can bring immense pride. I encourage students to discover how beautiful it is to show up for yourself in the way required to learn a complex craft like playing an instrument and then to share that love of creation with others.
